Callous Your Mind
Here's the Mantra to Build Mental Toughness & become a mentally stronger person!
Ever had the feeling of being soft and weak? Here’s how to harden up ->
“Until you experience hardships like abuse and bullying, failures and disappointments, your mind will remain soft and exposed. Life experience, especially negative experiences, help callous the mind.” - David Goggins in his Book Can’t Hurt Me.
A callous person is insensitive or we can say, an emotionally hardened human.
According to Goggins, the obstacles of the mind are harder to overcome than those of the body (surely, this is something many of us find true).
How can we start to become emotionally stronger & insensitive to things that shouldn’t matter to us?
Simple, the same way Martial artists develop calluses (hardened skin) in their knuckles by exposing them to discomfort and pain until it hardens naturally, hence increasing the power in their punches. Initially, it hurts a lot when the skin is soft, but gradually with time & practice & even some bleeding, their skin becomes as hard as concrete & they stop feeling pain anymore.
Similarly, when you first start the process of gaining control over your emotions, expect to get a lot of resistance from your mind as you haven’t trained it yet & will provoke you to take the path of least resistance.
“The reason it’s important to push hardest when you want to quit the most is because it helps you callous your mind. It’s the same reason why you have to do your best work when you are the least motivated.”
In order to callous your mind, you must force yourself to do things you don’t want to do.
Even if you don't want to. No IFs, ANDs, or BUTs or any excuses.
Just push yourself at that instant!
